The Role of a Trail Guide

What It Means to Lead our Trail Rides and Events

A Trail Guide is a trusted volunteer leader who helps turn a loose group of drivers into a coordinated team. When people sign up for a ride, they’re trusting that someone has thought through the plan, understands the terrain, and can help the group move through the trail in a way that’s safe and respectful. A Trail Guide is not just “the person in front.” You’re the person who sets expectations, watches the pace, checks in on the group, and makes judgment calls when conditions change. Your leadership is most visible when things are easy—but it becomes most important when things are difficult.

Being a Trail Guide also means you’re representing the organization. People will remember the ride based on how it felt: whether it was organized, whether beginners felt supported, whether safety was handled calmly, and whether the group behaved respectfully toward the trail and other users. Trail Guides shape the culture more than any social media post ever will. If you lead with patience and clarity, the group follows that energy. If you lead with ego or chaos, it spreads even faster.

It’s also important to understand what a Trail Guide is not. You are not a “boss,” and you shouldn’t try to lead by intimidation or authority. Our community is built on respect, not dominance. You are not law enforcement, and your job isn’t to police people harshly or create confrontations. You are also not responsible for fixing every mechanical issue or recovering every vehicle alone. Your job is to make good decisions, coordinate support, and keep the situation safe—not to prove you can do everything yourself.

A strong Trail Guide learns to balance confidence with humility. You should feel prepared and capable, but you should also know your limits and never be afraid to ask for help from other experienced members. The goal is not to be the hero. The goal is to deliver a safe and positive experience, get everyone home, and protect the land we’re lucky enough to use.

Bigfoot’s Thoughts

“Trail Guide means you guide the trail. Not ‘trail boss.’ Not ‘trail dictator.’ Not ‘trail instagram stuntman.’ If you start yellin’ at people, I will throw acorns at you from the woods.”
