Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some insights and commonly asked questions.
How does the 70% income for the state chapter work?
Great question!
USOffRoad handles all the administration at the national level — collecting member information, processing memberships and donations. Your state chapter automatically receives all member details for your roster and mail out letters with trail badges to your active members.
Each week, every Wednesday, USOffRoad sends your chapter 70% of all collected membership, giving you steady, reliable funding to grow your programs and support your local off-road community.
What does the 30% do at the national level?
The 30% retained by the USOffRoad national organization is reinvested directly into the systems, tools, and support structures that every state chapter relies on. Instead of each state trying to build expensive infrastructure on its own, the national team provides a centralized foundation that keeps everything running smoothly, securely, and professionally.
Here’s what that 30% funds:
1. Technology & Platform Development
USOffRoad builds and maintains the nationwide digital ecosystem:
The interactive trail maps and unified database
The member portal and chapter management tools
The upcoming mobile app for iOS & Android
Cloud hosting, security, backups, and scaling
New features like badges, volunteer tracking, and sponsor overlays
This allows every chapter—big or small—to have a professional-grade platform from day one.
2. Branding, Marketing, & National Awareness
National handles:
Brand development and design assets for all chapters
National-level advertising campaigns
Partnerships with 4×4 companies and outdoor brands
Templates, graphics, and promotional tools states can reuse
This helps elevate every chapter and makes each state instantly recognizable under the USOffRoad umbrella.
3. Administration, Compliance & Insurance
The national office covers:
IRS compliance and nonprofit governance
Legal filings and accounting
National liability protections
Policies, SOPs, and guidance for chapters
This ensures chapters stay protected and focus on their mission—not paperwork.
4. Grants, Sponsorships & Fundraising Support
USOffRoad works to secure:
National grants that benefit multiple chapters
Major sponsorships that states could not secure alone
Fundraising infrastructure and donor management tools
These opportunities flow downstream and increase revenue potential for every state.
5. Training, Course Development & Standards
National creates and maintains:
Safety programs
Educational courses
Volunteer certifications
Standardized stewardship guidelines
States get plug-and-play resources without needing to build them from scratch.
6. Chapter Support & Expansion
Finally, national reinvests in:
Onboarding new chapters
Helping existing chapters grow
Providing consultation, design help, and tech support
Creating nationwide trail data and mapping partnerships
This strengthens the entire network, which benefits every state in it.
Can State Chapters collect other donations and income?
State Chapters are fully encouraged—and empowered—to generate their own independent income streams. Each Chapter has complete freedom to manage and grow its local revenue in ways that best support its community and mission.
Chapters may collect fees from local sub-groups such as Jeep clubs, 4×4 communities, or regional off-road teams. They can also secure sponsorships from local shops and businesses, run fundraisers and special events, and even produce and sell their own merchandise.
USOffRoad will partner with every State Chapter to help design custom badges tailored to their region—trail badges, cleanup badges, seasonal badges, or unique chapter-exclusive collectibles. These badges not only strengthen your chapter’s branding but also create new opportunities for engagement and fundraising.
Most importantly, 100% of all locally generated income stays with the State Chapter. This includes sponsorships, merchandise revenue, sub-group fees, and chapter-specific badge programs.
Chapters are also free to pursue local sponsorships from off-road shops, dealerships, outfitters, restaurants, or any business interested in supporting your brand and community presence.
How would we setup our state chapter?
How do we set up our State Chapter?
Getting started is simple. Once you sign the State Chapter Agreement — which includes a standard non-compete clause should you decide to step away — the USOffRoad team guides you through every step of launching your chapter.
We’ll walk you through the recommended process for filing your own 501(c)(3) (or 501(c)(7) if preferred), and we provide everything you need to hit the ground running, including:
Complete branding package (logos, templates, graphics)
Website setup support
Interactive trail maps customized for your state
Access to our national digital tools
Training materials and marketing assets
Future access to the USOffRoad mobile app (launching 2026)
Our goal is to make launching your chapter seamless, professional, and fully supported from day one.
What could the state chapter do?
State Chapters are the heartbeat of the off-road community. Your team can organize trail ride meetups, host local events, lead fundraisers, coordinate trail cleanups, and support a wide range of activities that bring off-roaders together.
Chapters also play a key role in national efforts — from time to time, USOffRoad launches national initiatives that every state participates in and helps promote, uniting the entire off-road community under shared goals and campaigns.
Each chapter helps build community, protect local trails, and create meaningful opportunities for members to get involved and stay connected.
What costs are involved in getting started?
First, we have no fees to get started, so thats awesome. However, there are some things you will need out of pocket to start up, like a website and hosting (we will help you with the domain), setting up your 501c3/7 (1023-ez form is $275), any state setup fees for your non profit, and a few hundres bucks in badges, shipping materials like tape, envelopes and the like.
It can range from $500-$1,500 depending on how you want to set it up and how arrgressively you want to go.
We help you with all the setup, the website branding look, we provide you the chapter badge/logo and can guide you on all the places to go in order get started.
Whats the exeptation of donations for the state chapter?
Great question.
Truthfully, the level of success will depend heavily on how much time and effort you invest in marketing, networking, and building your state’s individual brand. Each state is different. For example, Colorado has over 65 trails in its network, while states like Virginia currently have about 20 active trails.
Because of this, states with a larger trail network tend to attract more donating members and generate higher engagement overall. Based on early data and performance from existing models, a new state chapter can reasonably expect to raise between $12,000 and $53,000 in its first year, depending on trail volume, community involvement, and consistency in outreach.
However, it’s important to understand that this level of success doesn’t happen automatically. Running your nonprofit chapter means being active almost every day—blogging, researching, engaging with local clubs, promoting responsible off-roading, managing social content, hosting events, and continually marketing and advertising your mission.
The more effort put into building the brand, maintaining visibility, and connecting with your local off-road community, the stronger the results will be.
📊 Final Summary Table (3-Year Projection)
| Year | Low Estimate | High Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | $47,000 | $55,000 |
| Year 2 | $58,750 | $68,750 |
| Year 3 | $70,500 | $82,500 |
